Born in China, Made in America In the late 1970’s, Soy Tir and his family followed thousands fleeing to Thailand as they escaped the terror of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge regime. The treacherous journey to Thailand led to deportation from that country and a traumatic return to Cambodia before they found freedom in the United States. Soy’s quest brought bitterness, hunger, anxiety, questioning and a life-altering injury. What set ten-year-old Soy apart from the other youngsters on a similar journey were his innate intelligence and resourcefulness, and, more importantly, the sense of family, purpose and faith. He learned that life holds something good for those who work for it. In Born in China, Made in America, Soy shares a story of discouragement and joy, of perseverance and despair. Additionally, he answers questions about why people choose to immigrate; why hunger, cruelty and diminished dignity override the quest for a better life. Through his story, readers learn about hope and the human desire to live which provides fuel to overcome great adversities. His life’s story is also an insight into how cruel and dark the human race can be while demonstrating that those with aspiration to be successful can achieve a sense of peace by holding tight to their roots and personal relationships. Soy’s memoir details the journey to freedom, the hardships of life with no home and no idea what the next day would bring. The reader learns about his family, the death of his grandmother and how a young boy processes the confusion, fear, and the uncertainty of a literal journey to freedom. Stops along the way, such as his time in a makeshift camp or abandoned city, relate how his and other families learned to improvise for food, shelter and communication. A highlight of the book includes his memory of a severe injury, his long recovery and his mother’s care during that period. When the family finally receives a sponsorship to the United States, Soy learns that freedom is a blessing, but it does not immediately relieve hardship. As the family struggles, encountering a fire just as things were beginning to look promising, Soy grows physically and mentally stronger. He learns English by reading comic books and finds ways to earn money, demonstrating as an adolescent that he has engineering talent. By the time he is ready for college, Soy and his family are settling into their lives in the United States, with success and recognition that the family unit is the most important asset. In addition to the family’s road to freedom, Born in China, Made in America relates the story of Soy’s meeting his wife and the start of his own family. Today, as a successful engineer in the petrochemical industry, he is acclimated into a democratic society – but his insights and thoughts on the strength of the family continue to mature and develop.
Born In China Made in America eBook Soy Tir
Soy Tir personified Sir Henry David Thoreau's dictum: "I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor." I got the book thinking I would finish it in four or five sittings but I found that I couldn't put it down. The reason is because Soy Tir matched the words with the action - his experiences put movies like Blood Diamond to shame and he was able to find the right words to portray his graphic past. There is no doubt he is a great storyteller and his story is also compelling. These are tales that must be told, and told often, and I am grateful that he decided to "expel his demons" through writing about his past. Part of why I was drawn into his life drama is because I share many of his childhood experiences. I was raised in a third world country, have witnessed violence on a large scale (though not nearly as bad as living during the Khmer Rouge era) and I came to America to be "re-born." Entering into Soy Tir's world through the book is like entering into a sanctuary; you gain a new perspective of life's realities. The book will take you through a range of emotions from shock to palpable fear to happiness. Chapter 20 is my favorite chapter because in it Soy Tir raises a host of questions that plague almost every successful immigrant and he does not pretend to have all the answers. As you read this memoir, you will at times lose hope in humanity. You will see how inhuman we can be. But you will also applaud the indefatigability of the human spirit. The decision of Soy's father, to go back to Thailand and try again after the previous attempt almost wiped them out encapsulates what is most human about us: hope, faith, resilience.
I highly recommend this book. I have many biographies of the rich and famous and powerful but Soy Tir's 194 page memoir surpasses them all.

Born In China Made in America eBook Soy Tir Reviews
Few books have left me speechless for a while...then I couldn't stop talking about it. The storms of emotions that this incredible story teller has gifted us is remarkable.
This is not only a testimony of live events but a full trip into time due to it is extraordinary level of details and special ability of Soy Tir to involve you in a world where you are as scared as hopeful. It took me just few hours of one read to complete the book, I wouldn't be able to comeback to the book later; after every line you read..... you really need to know what happens next!
It is an honor to have the opportunity to know this story of endurance, love and triumph. I truly recommend for everyone to read, no matter the walk of live you are from, it will enrich you.
My respects to the Tir family.
I have never cried so hard after reading a book. Very powerful, life changing stories. It had touched me so close to home and so close to my heart. It is definitely one of those autobiography that gets you hooked and you must read to the end.
Here's the review part
I have so much to say and don't know where to start. First of all Soy, I want to say how proud I am of you. To endure so much tragedy and near death encounters at such a young age but to have that perseverance and determination to be as successful as your are today is the most powerful, beyond amazing (really there is not words to describe this) strength one can ever imagine. Tears filled my eyes and I had to put the book down after reading about your sister's death. I then could not stop reading the book after getting back to it. I tear up some more throughout the book because I could not believe you had to go through such tragedy and cross referencing it to my parent's experience did not help. The part that got me crying hard again was when you had to say goodbye permanently to your father. Just a rush of different emotions came to me as it was the saddest moments for me to not only miss one of the world's amazing man, but to know that I have no control over the longing moments I wish to spend with my dad, mom and siblings. The worst of it all is to know that we have all made it to American alive through all this hardship and not have the families united. My mother said similar things to me like, "Don't come see me, even if I'm in my grave I don't want you there", or "I have 3 other children I don't care if I lose one". It's good to know that I am not the only one struggling with the differences in generation, culture and language barriers and I am not the only one who wants more than anything else in this world but to have all my family members, more importantly my parents united. Also, a very powerful, motivating, inspirational book that reminds us to be thankful for what we have and to not take for granted our freedom, including the many beautiful and abundance things offered here to us within our fingertips in the USA . We are in an amazing country.
I just finished reading Soy Tir's book and I was blown away! The book was impossible to put down after I started reading it. Soy is a wonderful story teller and he shared with the world his struggles to get to the United States & overcome all the obstacles in his life. Soy is such a great guy to know, I am very honored to say I worked for him & got to know him pretty well. The book is a must read!!
It is hard to find words to describe this book and its impact on me. I intended to read it over a week and finished it in a day. I have always enjoyed hearing the stories of people and this author is a great story teller who brings to life the incredible hardships he suffered as well as the hope that prevailed. From boyish games and fun to horrific things no boy should ever have to witness, this book covers the whole gamut. I found myself smiling, laughing, crying, feeling disgust, anger and fear as well as cheering on the hope of the human race. What an amazing story! It has left me wanting to read it again, read stories of others around the world and find ways to make a difference to those in similar situations today. I think one indicator of a great book is that it changes the way one thinks. This book definitely fits that category.
(And by the way, my 17 year old son who doesn't like to read much finished this book in less than a day. A first!)
